This striking red gorgonian originates from Madagascar, where it develops along vertical reef walls at depths ranging from approximately 20 to 100 meters, shaped by steady ocean currents into an elegant, fan-like structure. Like corals, gorgonians are colonial marine animals composed of countless tiny sessile polyps arranged in a branching, tree-like formation. Their internal structure consists of a flexible yet supportive proteinaceous material known as gorgonin, combined with calcareous elements, creating a skeleton that is both resilient and slightly pliable. Rather than growing toward sunlight, they orient themselves perpendicular to prevailing currents to maximize water flow and efficiently filter nutrients.
