A Starlit Summer

When celebrities want to slip away from red-carpet or royal duties, vacationing becomes a refined ritual. Seeking privacy and refuge, they don’t just take a holiday - they define one. From Dolce Vita postcards to the pristine dunes of Comporta, certain destinations have become synonymous with jet-set escapism and remain sanctuaries to this day.

Dolce Vita Icons

In Capri, Old Hollywood found its oasis: Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren sipped espressos at La Fontelina, and Brigitte Bardot retreated to Fontelina’s wooden beach hut. Portofino’s pastel harbor welcomed Jackie Kennedy in 1959, where she famously tucked her silk
scarf under her chin to guard against sea breezes. On Costa Smeralda, the Aga Khan’s 1960s vision reimagined the wild coastline as a sanctuary of luxury, transforming it into a destination. Princess Margaret and Peter Sellers holidayed together on his yacht, while Greta Garbo dined at Hotel Cala di Volpe on a bespoke three-course menu by chef Sergio Volpi.
To channel timeless Italian elegance, reach for an off-the-shoulder linen dress or open-collar shirt, a silk scarf (draped over the hair or knotted at the waist), and crisp white trousers.

Riviera Awakening

In the 1950s, while filming "And God Created Woman", Brigitte Bardot discovered Alexandre Micka’s pâtisserie and suggested he rename his cream-filled brioche “Tarte Tropézienne.” Just like that, SaintTropez became the Riviera’s most coveted retreat.
Jane Birkin kept a Tuscan villa style here, and Romy Schneider was often seen strolling the village.

Grace Kelly’s gilded appearances along the Cannes Croisette and cemented its cinematic prestige. To summon Riviera ease — where glamour is instinctive and effortless — pack a high-waisted bikini
or tailored swim trunks, tortoiseshell sunglasses, and a classic Provençal straw tote.

American Daydreams

Palm Springs in the 1960s was a haven for Hollywood’s elite. Frank Sinatra threw parties at his Twin Palms house — and planted a Jack Daniel’s flag each afternoon to let neighbors know happy hour was officially on —, Greta Garbo and Clark Gable escaped to the Ingleside Inn, and Marilyn Monroe often vacationed at Indian Canyons. On the East Coast, a totally different mood of coastal preppy. Jackie Kennedy summered in the Hamptons, where Truman Capote also kept a fisherman's cottage and hosted literary salons.
To capture that coast-to-coast vintage cool, pack a 50s-inspired swimsuit, a colorful kaftan or linen shirt, and a dramatic hat.

Pacific Echoes

Mexico’s Pacific coast has long been a magnet for old Hollywood. Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley vacationed in Acapulco during its golden days, and the Kennedys spent their 1953 honeymoon in this beach resort town. Further along the coast, Puerto Vallarta remains a symbol of Taylor and Richard Burton’s romance. In 1964, Burton purchased Casa Kimberley as a birthday gift for Taylor, and bought the house across the street for himself — connecting both properties with a bridge. Today, Mexico’s legacy lives on with Cuixmala, offering a private retreat surrounded by untamed nature.

Maxi dresses, matching linen sets, and bold colours capture the coast’s charm — pair them with leather sandals or espadrilles for an understated yet polished look.

Caribbean Confidential

In the Caribbean, privacy has always been the ultimate luxury. Greta Garbo sought it at Eden Rock in St. Barts, checking into the resort under the pseudonym “Suzy Schmidt” — and what began as a brief stay stretched to three weeks. Not far off, Mustique became Princess Margaret’s sanctuary when she received a 10-acre plot on the island as a wedding gift. There, she built Les Jolies Eaux — a villa overlooking Gelliceaux Bay, where she frequently hosted guests like Jagger, Bowie, and Raquel Welch.
To honour island style, slip into a silk kaftan or vibrant resort wear, lightweight drawstring trousers or flowy pants, and statement accessories — think oversized sunglasses, beaded clutches, sculptural earrings.

In a world where the spotlight rarely dims, these idyllic retreats offer more than just rest—they provide a return to self. For the famous few, a starlit summer isn't merely a break from routine, but a curated experience of beauty, discretion, and timeless allure. These escapes endure not just for their scenery, but for the serenity they promise—turning a getaway into an art form.
